Why European Tennis Players are Generally Better

For some reason I started to pay attention to the fact that most of the top Tennis players are from Europe, this is even more evident on male Tennis players and so I search all over the internet to know exactly why this happen.

In Europe, Tennis is one of the most popular sports, professional players have a big range of competitions to play and is very easy to travel to those competitions, the monetary conditions, geologic factors and the culture, make easier to be a successful professional Tennis player in Europe then in other continents.

This is more evident on male players because there is many other sports that can pay more and give then better conditions for development as a professional.

For woman’s is different because normally the tradition on other sports aren’t so big as it is for men’s, for example, a young woman athlete will probably have more success being a top professional Tennis player than a top Soccer, Baseball or Basketball player.

Differences between USA and Europe for young Tennis players

Let’s enumerate some differences between kids who live in USA and on Europe that want to pursue a Tennis career.

  • The School demanding. Young Tennis players on Europe don’t have to worry too much about getting good school grades if they have success playing Tennis as the kids from USA and this makes difference, is harder to study and practice Tennis at the same time.
  • Geological distance. The country of United States of America is bigger than most of the countries from Europe, so is easier for the Europeans to travel because of the distance, this is more important at young age since kids have to travel with parents and the more distant, more difficult is to find time and money to support the youngsters in tournaments.
  • Sport popularity (the most important). In the USA, sports like American football, Basketball, Baseball, soccer and Ice hockey dominate, if a young boy is a good athlete, is much better for him to follow a career in one of those sports than choosing Tennis, he will have more opportunity and will be more successful.

In Europe, the scenario is other, Soccer is the most popular sport and Tennis is the second most popular.

For woman’s there is not much differences, this happens because Tennis is a great option for a young athlete to follow, you can see that a lot of American woman’s are present on the top rankings of the WTA.

I could say without doubts that one of the greatest tennis players of the WTA is American; Serena Williams is an inspiration alongside with her sister Venus.

Support for a female athlete to pursue a tennis career is much greater than for male athletes in the United States. Girls from all over the World go to the United States train tennis because they have an amazing structure and learning system.

Even the physical distance between the championships are not that big of a deal, if tennis is one of the first options for a young woman to pursue her career if she wants to be a world-renowned and successful athlete.

Why is tennis so popular in Eastern Europe

You could say that tennis is particular famous to form top players on Eastern Europe. Countries like Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, Romania, Czech Republic, Belarus and Poland are always present on the top 100 ATP and WTA ranking.

The popularity of tennis on Eastern Europe is due to the economic position. In Eastern Europe, the countries are poorer than the Western ones and for a young athlete to change the economic life of his family; Tennis is one of the best options.

Also, the mindset of a young tennis player from Eastern Europe is different from that of a young player from Western Europe, they do not have the luxury of giving up their careers easily due to lack of opportunities in other sports.

Eastern European tennis players have a greater will to succeed despite all adversities, for them there is no easy way to be monetarily successful in any other sports and tennis rewards very well those at the top ranking.

Why are there so many good Russian tennis players

Medvedev, Rublev, Pavlyuchenkova, Karatsev, Khachanov, Kasatkina, Kudermetova and a lot of others great players from the past like Sharapova, Kafelnikov, Marat Safin, Kuznetsova and Anastasia Myskina have one thing in comum, they are all Russian.

The number of great Russian Tennis players is due to the political factor of the country, in recent years Russia has started to invest more in the sport with better structures and thus increasing the possibilities of revealing new talents.

Despite this, many Russian tennis players do not remain in the country and go to train in other European countries that provide a better and cheaper structure for their development; many of these athletes are poor and seek a better financial life outside Russia.

The Laver Cup tournament is the clear proof that male tennis players from Europe are dominating the sport.

Since 2017, the year of its first edition, Team Europe has won the Team World with a huge advantage, this happens since the best tennis players today are from Europe.

The exception is the 2019 edition of the Laver Cup where the score was 13 to 11 for the Team Europe. The next edition was another story, Team Europe won with 14 points against just 1 from Team World.
