What Size Tennis Racquets do Professionals Use

Are the racket head size of pro Tennis players large or small?  To get an answer I did extensive research to first know which racket model they use to then figure out which head size is the most used.

Most of men’s pro Tennis players uses racquets with 98-inch head size, the second most used racquet head size is 100 inch. For women’s, the most used Tennis racquet head size is 100 inch and the second most used is 98 inch.

The table above shows all the data I collected from the top 100 ATP Players (February 2022) and their racquets models and head size. It is not completely ordered by the ranking position.

You can see the question mark in a lot of models and head size for the racquets they really use, this is because is not always possible to be sure since they may or may not use a Pro Stock racquet with the same mold as an old model.

That’s why I could not get data from all top 100 players, and you will see ahead on this Post, the graphics I created based on the table and the number of players I was able to use.

I recommend you go in this article here with the list I’ve made of the rackets the ATP players use, there you will find not only the model they use but sometimes the string and the rackets they used to play with on the past.

First, the graphic below, shows the percentage of 99 ATP Tennis players (February 2022) endorsed racquet tennis size.

An endorsed racquet is the model a Tennis player endorse, but not always use, they could or could not use a modified model with the same paintjob of the model they endorse.

Seems like the racquet head size of men’s players are more and more big than it was on the past, at least this is more eminent on the racquets those players endorse.

This scenario chances a bit when I see the head size of racquets that the pro Tennis players really use.

The next graphic show the percentage of racquet head size of racquet they really use from 86 players and you can see that most of then still uses 98 in and 100 in racquets, but the number of players using 95 in racquets is relatively bigger compared to the racquets they endorse.

From 86 players of Top 100 ATP Tennis players ranking, 41% use 98-inch racquet head size, 34% use 100-inch head size, 18% use 95-inch head size, 6% use 97-inch head size and just 1% use 99-inch head size.

Note: The list above is not completely ordered by top 1 to top 100, but they are formed of players on the top 100 on February 2022.

I could only identify 92 WTA Tennis players endorsed racquets head size from this list of top 100.

If you want to know more about the rackets those WTA Tennis players use, click here to open the more in dept list with extra information like the models they used on the past and string.

The graphic below shows the percentage of women’s pro Tennis players racquet head size:

From this top 100, I just identified 61 racquet head size of the racquets they really use, you can see on the next graphic that they still use mostly 100 in and 98 in head size, but the number of 100 in are bigger.

Of 61 players of Top 100 WTA Tennis players, 65% use racquets with 100-inch head size, 23% 98-inch head size, 6% 97-inch head size, 2% 99-inch, 2% 101-inch and 2% 105-inch head size.

You may also be interested to know why European players have best results in ATP and WTA, click here to open in another tab the research I’ve made about it.

I also made research about the weight of Pro Tennis players; you can read here in this link.

Professional Tennis players don’t normally use oversize racquets

According to the Tennis Warehouse website, oversize Tennis racquets head size ranges from 106 to 115 square inches.

Pro Tennis players don’t use oversize racquets. From the data collect of top 100, you can find some 105-inch head size on the WTA players side, but for ATP Players nothing close to it can be found, 100-inch are the bigger you can find at this level.

Of course, some pro players cold be playing with oversize racquets, but this is very rare and inexistent at top 100 Tennis professional level as of February 2022.

Why do pros use smaller racquets?

A long time ago the head size of Tennis racquets where really small, now, most of Tennis players, pro or recreational, use midplus head size, between 95 and 105 in.

Is interesting to note that the head of the rackets are getting bigger but the grip size are getting smaller, know more about the size of the grip here in this other Post.

But, as you could see from my research, is very rare to find pro Tennis players using oversize racquets (106-116 inches), but that doesn’t mean no one is using those racquets.

Seniors and juniors Tennis players often use oversize racquets, this happen because they need a bigger frame to help then with more power.

The pro Tennis players don’t need all the power the oversize Tennis racquets can offer and they need all the control that racquets with smaller head size can provide to then, that’s why is more common to see pro’s using smaller racquets.

Men tend to be physically stronger than woman and you can see that the WTA Tennis players use a little bigger head size compared to the ATP Tennis players.

The weight of the racket also influences its performance, most Pro Tennis players use heavy rackets, click here to open an article here in the blog about it, and you can read here my research about the average weight of pros rackets.
